How to Visit Göbeklitepe: A Practical Guide
Everything you need for a visit to the world's oldest known monumental site – getting there, timing, Karahantepe and how to combine it with Harran and Mardin.

Göbeklitepe, near Şanlıurfa in southeastern Turkey, is roughly 11,000–12,000 years old – thousands of years older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Its T-shaped stone pillars, carved with foxes, boars, snakes and birds, changed how archaeologists think about the beginning of civilisation. The site has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2018.
Getting there
Fly to Şanlıurfa GAP Airport (GNY) from Istanbul or Ankara. The site is about 20 minutes by car from the city centre. A private guide and vehicle let you arrive at opening time, before the tour buses, and add nearby sites on the same day.
Best time to go
Spring (April–May) and autumn (late September–November) are ideal. Summer afternoons are very hot in this region, so visit early in the morning. A protective roof covers the main enclosures, but the walkways are in the sun.
Don't skip Karahantepe and the museum
Karahantepe, about an hour east, belongs to the same culture and has a chamber with carved human heads emerging from the rock. The Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum displays finds from both sites, including the Urfa Man statue, and is one of the largest museums in Turkey.
Combine it with Harran and Mardin
Harran's beehive houses are about 45 minutes south of Şanlıurfa. Mardin, with its honey-coloured stone old town above the Mesopotamian plain, is around 2.5 hours away and makes a perfect overnight stop.
How long do I need at Göbeklitepe? About 1.5–2 hours including the visitor centre.
Is the Museum Pass Türkiye valid? Yes, the state-run sites and museums in the region are covered by the Museum Pass.
